Insipid Lie
I'm inside outside upright downright happy all the time
I'm inside outside upright downright happy all the time
Since Jesus Christ came in
And cleansed my heart from sin
I'm inside outside upright downright happy all the time.
What a crock.

Call a spade a spade...
As an adult this seems insipid, but for a child? Maybe not.
I can't remember thinking that there were problems in the world until I was in my teens. As a child, though, happiness was sort of where I lived. The world was measured in happiness and sadness. Still, on any given day, happiness reigned.
I think that children who are spiritually aware of God are in that zone that Jesus commended as being "like a little child." The faith of young children who love Jesus is a precious thing, and I would suppose that love for Christ to a child is probably best described through happiness. The joy, joy, joy, joy down in the heart, so to speak.
Then again, maybe I'm just reading too much into this! :P
I dunno, Dan. A close firend of mine was sexually abused by a member of the church for the first decade of her life. She loved Jesus, but she was not, in fact, inside outside updirght downright happy all the time.
'Happiness' by definition is a result of external circumstances beyond our control -- it shares the same root word with 'happenstance.'
